Some progress made

Mike got my backup going so I was able to find about 6000 missing images and copy them over.  I just need to run my script now.  I'll have to modify the code first though.  I'm still missing images for about 2100 posts between 10/14/03 to 8/25/2005.  The outlook of finding these images are bleak.  I do have an idea though.

I may create  a page letting users who have the missing images on their computer re-upload them and my code would automatially repopulate the posts with missing images with those.  It would require a little effort on the user's end - but I'm thinking that we could at least restore some to most of these images that way.  2100 or so posts isn't to bad considering we have over 200,000 posts overall.  I'll keep you posted.

Funny thing, funny coincidence. My prentar in Flickr Commons crime, the indispensable student worker Doug, just responded to my latest round of should we ____ or shouldn't we ____ Flickr hand-wringing with I think we need to stop putting so many rules on ourselves. He's a wise one, that Doug We made up tagging rules quite early on for our general OSU Archives Flickr account, even creating more than one rules document and restricting tagging (it was the default and I'm sure there was a perfectly well-thought reason we'd made up) and we carried that over to The Commons. While there are Flickr Commons rules (ie only photos ), we may have brought our own set of restrictions, probably designed to make us feel better and more in control. In my experience, the user-supplied tags/comments haven't been anything other than plain old normal words and phrases! And, as a result of this post, I just got finished asking Doug to change that default and make sure anyone and everyone can tag and comment away on any photo with lingering restrictions.

I love that sweater with the short shorts, tights, and boots. You're the second blogger I've seen rocking that particular look, both of you very differently. It makes me want a big hand knitted sweater. (Hmmmm, maybe I can press my mother in law into service?)Heather Fonseca recently posted..

Funny thing, funny coincidence. My partner in Flickr Commons crime, the indispensable student worker Doug, just responded to my latest round of “should we ____ or shouldn’t we ____” Flickr hand-wringing with “I think we need to stop putting so many rules on ourselves.” He’s a wise one, that Doug…We made up tagging “rules” quite early on for our general OSU Archives Flickr account, even creating more than one “rules” document and restricting tagging (it was the default and I’m sure there was a perfectly well-thought reason we’d made up)– and we carried that over to The Commons. While there are Flickr Commons rules (ie “only photos”), we may have brought our own set of restrictions, probably designed to make us feel better and more in control. Oh no, I didn’t mean that they were simply pointing out the obvious, rather that they hadn’t written anything that would justify turning off tagging or censoring comments. One thing we did determine from the outset with Flickr Commons was that the only “censoring” or “editing” of user supplied tags/comments would occur if they were what might be considered hate speech (racist, sexist, homophobic, etc.).
